Patrick McGinty, a Slippery Rock University assistant professor of language, literatures, cultures and writing, was a finalist in the 2024 Kukula Awards. McGinty was recognized for his piece titled, “Exposed Bricks: A Review of "The City Authentic: How the Attention Economy Builds Urban America,” which was a review of David A. Banks' book that critiqued how cities prioritize superficial online branding over addressing real issues due to social media and capital interests.

The Kukula Awards are hosted by Washington Monthly and includes a panel of judges ranging from seasoned journalists to book lovers. McGinty was one of four finalists in the Small Publications Category, with Yangyang Cheng being the winner for her piece titled, “Centuries of Dislocation: Perhat Tursun and the Uyghurs in Xinjiang,” which reviewed two books about China and ethnic oppression of the Uyghur population.
