July 15, 2022

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. — Colleges of Distinction has named Slippery Rock University a 2022-23 Equity & Inclusion College of Distinction in recognition of its dedication to equal opportunity for all students, faculty and staff. Institutions awarded the Equity & Inclusion badge are recognized for making "a concerted effort to promote fair treatment and access at all levels, with resources and programming that grant extra support to underrepresented communities." COD is an online guide for college-bound students that honors colleges and universities throughout the U.S. for their excellence.

"Equity is an action, not a statement," said Tyson Schritter, chief operating officer at Colleges of Distinction. "SRU is always listening to how it can create a more just environment, from the administrative level down to the students' everyday experience on campus. We're encouraged to see this school's long history of promoting inclusion and making swift yet mindful adjustments along with the ever-changing times."

COD evaluates institutions based on areas that include the diverse population of students and faculty, food and housing security, physical and mental health care, Pell grants and financial aid, academic inclusion, and campus activities and community support.

SRU's Office for Inclusive Excellence is focused on driving positive interactions with all cultures and providing academic and social support through diverse learning opportunities. Additionally, the University has eight President's Commissions that represent the interests of SRU's diverse campus community. These commissions, comprised of students, faculty, staff and administrators, engage with all campus constituents in promoting an inclusive and diverse campus community. SRU also follows statutes and policies for hiring a diverse workforce to provide an environment that respects, encourages and promotes the talents and contributions of all.

"SRU strives to go beyond simply having a welcoming environment for our campus community," said Anthony Jones, SRU's chief diversity officer. "We want to create an environment that is inclusive and equitable, where each member of our campus community can feel they belong. Our commitments to diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging are not only important as a public institution that serves the public good, but it makes our University perform better and provide the best place possible for people to work and learn."

"SRU has created a welcoming environment for underserved students," said Schritter. "It's a tremendous opportunity to highlight the noteworthy support offered for students who might not otherwise study and thrive on a college campus."

Earlier this summer, SRU was awarded three additional COD badges when it was named a 2022-23 national, public and Pennsylvania college of distinction. Also, SRU received the 2021-22 Field of Study badges for its education, business and nursing programs, as well as special recognition for career development.
