Ms. Barbara Westman moved to the US from Poland in 2002. She completed her education in her home
country. First, she completed a BFA in Visual Communication, School of Applied Arts, Poznań, and then
decided to study fine arts. She was accepted at the prestigious Academy of Fine Arts in Poznań, currently named The Magdalena Abakanowicz University of the Arts. Westman completed her dual BFA and dual
MFA in Printmaking and Fiber Art there. While being a student there, she was a recipient of a four-year merit-based scholarship. She spent two
years living in London, UK, attending South Thames College and gaining experience at the interior design company where she fell in love in textiles.
Ms. Westman is a Professor of Fiber Art and Printmaking at Slippery Rock University. She engages students in creative activities stressing openness to the world beyond the studio walls: active participation in exhibitions, community projects, conferences and educational travel. In her studios she teaches students interdisciplinary approach to artmaking and looking into science, one’s personal experiences and knowledge gained in other studios. Over the years she initiated and developed international artistic collaborative projects for students in Poland, Australia, Portugal, Sri Lanka, Costa Rica, China, and more. She and her students have been awarded SRU Student Faculty Research Grants, Student Research Grants and Green Fund Grants. Her students presented at National Conferences on Undergraduate Research conferences (NCUR) and were accepted at selective exhibition venues, such as Fiber Art International, triennial in Pittsburgh, Monotype Guild of New England National Student exhibition, and more.
Barbara Westman’s artworks reflect interest in natural and man-made world where the richness of textures, structures and forms in our environment are her constant inspiration. Over the past years she has participated in many juried national and international shows, group shows, solo shows and presented at national and international conferences. She also was a juror for regional, national and international art exhibitions. Her artworks are in private collection in the USA, England, Germany, Italy, Egypt, Hungary, Bulgaria, Portugal, Spain, Netherlands, Poland, France, and were also aquired by Fondo Donne ad Arte/Academy of Fine Arts in Naples, Italy, Bibliotheca Alexandrina, Egypt, Penn State University, Beaver, PA, and more.
Member of College Art Association CAA, Southern Graphics Council International SGCI, Mid-Atlantic Print Council MAPC and Associated Artists of Pittsburgh AAP.
Travelling is her passion and a way of finding new inspiration. She is interested in meeting new cultures, interacting with the local people and finding new cuisine.
