Aug. 29, 2018
Sam Hone, a Slippery Rock University senior geology major from Prospect, won the Best Student Poster award at the Institute on Lake Superior Geology's annual meeting in Iron Mountain, Michigan.
Hone's poster, "Olivine Crystal Size Distribution in the Black Sturgeon Sill, Nipigon, Ontario," showed how certain igneous rocks form in multiple phases after he researched the distribution of crystal sizes in a rock formation in Canada. The ILSG's Student Paper Committee selects the recipients, who receive a monetary award, from among all student presenters at the annual meeting. The ILSG is a nonprofit professional society that provides a forum for geological ideas and scientific data and promotes the better understanding of geology in the Lake Superior region.
