Julie Naviaux, a Slippery Rock University assistant professor of literatures, languages, cultures and writing, presented her research at the College Language Association Convention last month at Emory University in Georgia. Her presentation, titled “Raging Battles: Jesmyn Ward and Colson Whitehead Teach to Prejudice Past and Present,” focused on how college students react to reading two novels, Ward’s “Salvage the Bones” and Whitehead’s “The Nickel Boys,” and how those texts about past racism in the South are used to better understand the present.

The CLA, founded in 1937 by a group of Black scholars and educators, is an organization of college teachers of English and world languages that serves the academic, scholarly and professional interests of its members and the collegiate communities they represent.
