SRU math students' poster earns honors at Sigma Xi conference

Four Slippery Rock University students won second place for their poster presentation at the Sigma Xi Regional Undergraduate Research and Creative Accomplishment Conference in Erie.

The poster, "Location and Scale Parameter Estimation of Burr Type III Distribution by Monte Carlo Markov Chain (MCMC) Procedure," was the runner up in the Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics category. Their research dealt with statistical methods for sampling from a probability distribution.

The four SRU students are:

  • Kyle Maraffi, a junior mathematics major from Slippery Rock.
  • Adam Majewski, a sophomore mathematics major from Erie.
  • Luke Pilarski, a sophomore mathematics major from Pittsburgh.
  • Mariah Kacey, a junior mathematics major from Pittsburgh.

Nearly 70 posters were presented at the conference, which is the hosted by Penn State Behrend's chapter of Sigma Xi, an international, multidisciplinary research society.
