A faculty-student research team from Slippery Rock University recently co-wrote an article that was published in the International Journal of Systematic and Evolutionary Microbiology.

Team consisted of Christopher Maltman, an SRU assistant professor of biology; George Lengyel, an SRU professor of chemistry; Emily Spotts, a 2023 SRU graduate with a degree in biology; and Nathan Guy, a junior chemistry major from Volant.

Their research paper, titled “Chryseobacterium metallicongregator, sp. nov., a bacterium possessing metallophore activity towards rare earth elements,” explains how a new species of bacteria was identified from acid mine drainage and is capable of producing a protein that can bind rare earth elements.
