SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. — With the 2023 fall semester winding down at Slippery Rock University, the SRU Music Department is gearing up for a series of concerts. From brass solos to giving celebrations, the following events are a great opportunity for people to unwind during a busy time of year:
Micah Holt, an SRU instructor of music, and Philip VanOuse, an SRU instructor of music, will lead the SRU Brass Ensemble for a concert, 7p.m., Dec. 1, in the Swope Music Hall.
Timothy Little Tran, an SRU assistant professor of music, and Jason Kush, an SRU professor of music, will lead the Celebration of Giving concert, 2 p.m., Dec. 2, in the Performing Arts Center's Miller Theater, in honor of the generosity of the SRU community. With special performances by the SRU Jazz Ensemble and Concert Choir, this concert helps ring in the holidays with a showcase of traditional and modern holiday music.
Little Tran and Cindy Candelaria-Pieve, an SRU assistant professor of music, will lead the SRU Choirs performance, 7:30 p.m., Dec. 4, in the Miller Theater. The concert will include performances from the Concert Choir, University Chorus and the Chamber Singers. It will also feature a cello performance by Paige Riggs, an SRU instructor of music.
Riggs will perform Sarah Quartel's five-movement work, "A Winter Day," for the choir, cello, and piano.
"Each song becomes a voyage that every singer and supporting musician undertakes alongside me," said Candelaria-Pieve. "Collectively, we have delved into the text and musical expression, honing our musical skills to effectively communicate each work's emotions. Our aim is to encapsulate, within a few minutes of performance, the essence of months of dedicated work."
Tickets for each performance are $5 for SRU students and $10 general admission. Tickets can be purchased online at sru.edu/tickets.
