Approximately 50 new trees, from a variety of species, were planted along Main Street in Slippery Rock to replace the Cleveland Select pear trees that were affected by fire blight, a contagious pathogen that has rendered the trees' leaves brown and withered. The project was led by a group from Slippery Rock University that included Luke Gregory, '19, who championed the "Fight the Blight" project as part of his Leadership Practicum course last year under the direction of David Krayesky, SRU associate professor of biology. SRU Foundation, Inc., also matched the first $5,000 raised through a crowdfunding site that Gregory established.
