SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. — Slippery Rock University's Dance Department is hosting its annual Faculty and Guest Artist Dance Concert, 7 p.m., Oct. 26, at the Miller Theater in the Performing Arts Center. The Faculty and Guest Artist Dance Concert features dances created by the SRU dance faculty and internationally known guest artists that are performed by SRU students in residence.
Tickets can be purchased online at sru.edu/tickets or at the Smith Student Center information desk. Cost is $15 for general admission.
One of the performances, titled "I'm...," presented by Chicago-based choreographer J-Sun, is a multicultural and multidisciplinary collaboration that blends hip-hop street dance forms -- particularly breaking -- with live funk and jazz drumming alongside traditional Chinese instrumentalists.
"This year's concert is going to celebrate the aesthetic diversity that has become a signature of this concert," said Jennifer Keller-Birkes, a SRU professor of dance. "We are very grateful to these artists who created original works for our students and shared their unique movement aesthetics and vocabularies. This concert is a wonderful way to see the variety of creative research that is happening in the Dance Department and on our campus."
Performances at the Oct. 26 concert will include Emmalee Hallinan, an SRU instructor of dance, presenting an original piece titled "Roll Up Your Sleeves." Set to an original sound score by Andy Hasenpflug, a SRU dance musician and instructor, "Roll Up Your Sleeves" explores themes of re-animation and personal growth through the lens of her experiences as a faculty member.
Keller-Birkes will present a film shot on Easdale Island, Scotland, during the Screendance in the Landscape workshop titled "Delicate Balance." The film captures the beauty of two dancers navigating a delicate landscape of wildflowers and slate shards, emphasizing the connection between movement and environment.
The faculty and guest artist dance concert will feature many other performances.
