SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. — Slippery Rock University's Bachelor of Science in civil engineering and Bachelor of Science in mechanical engineering programs have been accredited by ABET, the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology, which is the global accreditor of college and university programs in applied and natural science, computing, engineering and engineering technology.

ABET accreditation assures that programs meet standards to produce graduates ready to enter critical technical fields that are leading the way in innovation and emerging technologies, and anticipating the welfare and safety needs of the public.

"This is a significant milestone for SRU and our emerging Engineering Department," said Nicole Dafoe, dean of SRU's College of Engineering and Science. "With our industrial and systems engineering and petroleum and natural gas engineering programs receiving ABET accreditation in 2022, we can now say that all four of SRU's undergraduate programs in engineering have earned ABET accreditation, which is a major accomplishment. I congratulate everyone who has played a role in developing our engineering programs and setting our students up for successful careers in high-demand engineering professions."

ABET accredits programs following a voluntary peer-review process designed to add value to academic programs in the technical disciplines, where quality, precision and safety are of the utmost importance. Developed by technical professionals from ABET's member societies, ABET criteria focus on what students experience and learn. ABET accreditation reviews look at program curricula, faculty, facilities, and institutional support and are conducted by teams of highly skilled professionals from industry, academia and government, with expertise in the ABET disciplines.

ABET is a nonprofit, non-governmental organization that has accredited 4,564 programs at 895 colleges and universities in 40 countries and areas.

More information about ABET, its member societies and the accreditation criteria used to evaluate programs can be found at www.abet.org.
