SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. - Sew a another badge on Slippery Rock University's sash as the University has received a 2018-19 Colleges of Distinction Field of Study badge for its nursing program. The badge brings SRU's total on the year to three following awards to the business and education programs.

The COD Field of Study badges represent programs that invest in student engagement in fields that demand innovative, critical thinking. COD awards badges after a comprehensive vetting process, individually selecting schools based on such qualities as accreditation, breadth of program and a track record for success.

"We are pleased and honored to receive this recognition," said Mary Ann Thurkettle, SRU associate professor of nursing and department chair. "This is something that our students, faculty and alumni can be proud of."

SRU, one of the first nursing programs in the country to offer classes completely online, has two programs: a 21-credit program for graduate students to become certified school nurses and a 39-credit program for registered nurses to build on their associate degree or diploma education and earn a Bachelor of Science in Nursing.

Most of the nearly 250 students in the RN-to-BSN program are working in the field and complete their degrees at their preferred pace, thanks to eight-week sessions each semester.

In addition to the flexibility, Thurkettle said what distinguishes SRU's nursing program from others is that classes are taught by faculty with doctoral degrees and the curriculum focuses on skills, such as team-building and communication, that are based on employers' needs. The RN-to-BSN program is also accredited by the Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing.

According to COD, "the accredited nursing program at SRU has enabled its students to take

calculated action, even in high-pressure situations. Their well-rounded perspective allows them to think on their feet and care deeply for their patients."

Aside from SRU's three Field of Study badges, COD has recognized SRU with three "College of Distinction" awards for 2018-19, including National, Regional and Public College of Distinction. Overall, COD evaluates institutions for their commitment to "Four Distinctions:" engaged students, great teaching, vibrant community and successful outcomes.

"SRU continues to impress with its exceptional commitment to student success," said Tyson Schritter, chief operating officer for Colleges of Distinction. "Its extensive liberal arts curriculum informs and enriches everything students do both in and out of the classroom. And with such an involved engagement of experiential high-Impact practices, SRU continues to go the extra mile in professional education."
