SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. — Slippery Rock University has received the Colleges of Distinction's 2021-22 Career Development badge, recognizing SRU for its outstanding commitment to student career development. Colleges of Distinction is an online guide for college-bound students that advocates for schools whose undergraduate experiences are grounded in a philosophy of engagement, teaching, community and outcomes. The Career Development badge is part of COD's individual recognition that focuses on institutions' specialized services for students.
"The Career Development recognition goes beyond a job board and résumé writing," said Tyson Schritter, chief operating officer at Colleges of Distinction. "SRU has shown inventiveness in connecting with students throughout their academic careers and beyond. Students and graduates are fully supported by SRU's outstanding career center."
SRU recently restructured its career center as the First National Bank Office of Career Education and Development and is now part of the newly formed Center for Career and Academic Progress. The office supports students and alumni in their learning and career development through person-to-person appointments, career management tools, speaking events, networking events, on-campus employer interviews and career expos and job fairs. The office serves a broad array of stakeholders including students and alumni, faculty and administrators, employers, parents and even community members, tailoring services to the needs of each particular group.
"This continual recognition by Colleges of Distinction is a reminder of our holistic and innovative approach to engaging students with their career management plans," said John Rindy, assistant vice president for career and academic progress. "The recent creation of our Center for Career and Academic Progress is an example of the tailored services that we offer students, but the University's commitment to students' career development and overall success is not limited to one office or area; it's part of our institutional mission that is carried out by faculty, staff and students."
According to COD, schools awarded the Career Development badge have shown that they are well equipped to help their students graduate with confidence, by "providing unparalleled support throughout every stage of career exploration, development and application." The badge recognizes schools with comprehensive four-year plans, advising and more.
COD has recognized and honored schools throughout the U.S. for excellence in undergraduate-focused higher education for more than 20 years. Earlier this summer, SRU was awarded three COD badges by being named a 2021-22 national, public and Pennsylvania college of distinction. Also, SRU received the 2021-22 Field of Study badges for its education, business and nursing programs.
