SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. - Slippery Rock University has already received three "College of Distinction" awards for 2018-19, grabbing honors as a National, Regional and Public College of Distinction, but now the Colleges of Distinction guide is getting down to business, that is, with program-specific recognition. SRU earned a Colleges of Distinction Field of Study badge for professional programming in business.
The COD Field of Study badges represent programs that invest in student engagement in fields that demand innovative, critical thinking. COD awards badges after a comprehensive vetting process, individually selecting schools based on such qualities as accreditation, breadth of program and a track record for success. Overall, COD evaluates institutions for their commitment to "Four Distinctions:" engaged students, great teaching, vibrant community and successful outcomes.
"This is meaningful recognition for the College of Business because the four areas that are assessed are what we constantly emphasize," said Lawrence Shao, dean of SRU's College of Business. "Our caring faculty foster a student-centric approach that allows our students to be engaged members of a vibrant community. Our success is measured on student outcomes, and this recognition further validates the value of an SRU education."
Shao added that SRU business students engage in applied scholarly research, service-learning activities, internships, diversity practices, community-based learning and study-abroad experiences. Last spring, 14 students from SRU's Management Information Systems course visited Ireland, learning how companies like PayPal and Dell are using technology. Additionally, business faculty led programs to Italy, Sweden, Costa Rica and Greece, to name a few.
According to COD, "the fast-paced, modern world of business requires effective communication and innovative strategies. SRU's programs in business keep their future leaders ahead of the curve and ready to grow alongside the industry."
"SRU continues to impress with its exceptional commitment to student success," said Tyson Schritter, chief operating officer for Colleges of Distinction. "Its extensive liberal arts curriculum informs and enriches everything students do both in and out of the classroom. And with such an involved engagement of experiential high-impact practices, SRU continues to go the extra mile in professional education."
COD has recognized and honored schools throughout the U.S. for excellence in undergraduate-focused higher education for more than 15 years. The member schools within the COD consortium distinguish themselves through their focus on the undergraduate experience. For more information, visit www.collegesofdistinction.com.
