SRU hosting Honors Flute Ensemble Concert, Feb. 27

Slippery Rock University will host its annual Honors Flute Ensemble Concert, 7 p.m., Feb. 27 in the Miller Theater at the Performing Arts Center.

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. — The Slippery Rock University Music Department will welcome musicians from local middle and high schools for its annual collaboration with the SRU Flute Studio Ensemble, as they host the 2022 SRU Honors Flute Ensemble Concert, 7 p.m., Feb. 27 in the Miller Theater at the Performing Arts Center.

The concerts culminate three days of workshops and rehearsals where at least a dozen middle and high school flutists will learn from SRU students, as well as guest performers and clinicians.

Cassandra Eisenreich, SRU assistant professor of music and coordinator of both the SRU Flute Studio and Honors Flute Ensemble, is excited for the ensemble concert to connect musicians of all levels and provide school-aged students an educational and musical opportunities.

"Students have the opportunity to learn from inspiring artists and clinicians with diverse backgrounds and interests," said Eisenreich. "They get to work directly with the composers to premiere new works written specifically for the SRU Honors Flute Ensemble."

In addition to Eisenreich, the Honors Flute Ensemble will work with performers and clinicians that include Daniel Pardo, Zoe Sorrell, Stephen Neely and Cassie Maloney. They will premiere pieces composed by Pardo, Jonathan Cohen, and Jeff Herwig, a 2015 SRU graduate with a degree in music education.

SRU Flute Studio members taking part in the performance include:

  • Rachel Crust, a junior music education major from Beech Creek.
  • Athena Konidaris, a freshman music education major from Trafford.
  • Isaiah Greenawalt, a senior music education major from Ruffs Dale.
  • Rachel Green, a junior music education major from Slippery Rock.
  • Hope Kaufman, a senior music therapy major from Alum Bank.
  • Nicole Laborie, a senior early childhood and special major from Butler.
  • Reilly Scherzer, a senior music education major from Cranberry Township.
  • Jessica Bobeck, a sophomore psychology major from Aliquippa.
  • Anna O'Malley, a sophomore music therapy major from Duxbury, Massachusetts.
  • Ellie Schooley, a freshman music therapy major from Woodford, Virginia.
  • Rose Obergefell, a freshman music education major from Mentor, Ohio.

"The students participating in the Honors Flute Ensemble have worked diligently to prepare seven selections of music," said Eisenreich. "We look forward to them having a warm and welcoming audience."
