Slippery Rock University's Feb. 9 Chinese New Year Celebration included a luncheon, interactive children's games, traditional performances and songs, and a Chinese calligraphy demonstration. The free, "Year of the Pig," program was hosted at the Slippery Rock Township Municipal Building in honor of the 4,000-year-old tradition that observes the start of the new lunar year and is also known as the "Spring Festival." Traditionally, the festival was a time to honor deities as well as ancestors. It also serves as a time to reconnect with family and friends, launch fireworks and take a break from work and responsibility. Dozens of international students of Chinese origin are enrolled at SRU.
