An opening reception for "Colors," a new exhibition by Barbara Westman, a Slippery Rock University associate professor of art, took place Jan. 28 at SRU's Martha Gault Art Gallery. The exhibit, on display through Feb. 21, features artworks made with natural dyes during Westman's fall 2018 sabbatical. According to Westman, the colors used in the pieces can be found in naturally sourced ingredients and turned into dyes by following traditional recipes and through experimental processes. "Natural dyeing presents unique challenges in application, providing a different palette of colors and hues available locally," said Westman. The experimentation and development of dyes took place in collaboration with four colleagues from the Artist Residency in Poland.
