SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. — Returning this year, the Slippery Rock University Dance Theatre will host two showings of its Emerging Artists Dance Concert, 7:30 p.m., Feb. 2, and 4 p.m., Feb. 3, at Miller Theater in the Performing Arts Center. Tickets are $15 and can be purchased online at our ticketing website.
The concert will feature the choreography of 10 SRU dance students with guest choreographers Teena Marie Custer, a 2000 SRU alumna; John Lehrer, a New York City dance artist; and Nathan Trice, a Brooklyn dance artist.
Ericka Morton, a senior dance major from Pittsburgh, and Lily Staib, a senior dual health and physical education and dance major from Pittsburgh, serve as student directors of SRUDT and they are contributing to the works of the guest artists.
Performers will explore many techniques, genres and styles including contemporary and modern dance.
"Many of these works are rooted in research on social justice issues, theoretical underpinnings, or an exploration of a new movement aesthetic," said Lindsay Viatori, an SRU instructor of dance and the concert's artistic director. "The dancing in this concert is exceptional, so even if an audience member is new to dance, they will leave Miller Theater moved."
In addition to Morton and Staib, other student choreographers are:
- Katelin Baughn, a senior dance major from Mount Gilead, Ohio.
- Jaidin Broody-Walega, a senior dance major from Pringle.
- Autumn Bulebush-Clouse, a senior dance major from Sewickley.
- Cassandra Dietrich, a senior dual dance and theatre major from West Alexander.
- Olivia Farmerie, a senior dance major from Butler.
- Kailey Fraer, a senior dance major from Cranberry Township.
- Kaitlin Halushka, a senior dance major from Pittsburgh.
- Will Vanslander, a junior dance major from Saint Marys.
