Learn Valuable Critical Thinking Skills

Mathematical Sciences is one of the most versatile degrees

Mathematics: Mathematical Sciences

Offered by: Mathematics and Statistics

Slippery Rock University's Mathematics program provides a strong mathematical foundation with concentrations focused on student interests and career goals. Mathematics majors choose one of four concentrations: Actuarial Science, Mathematical Sciences, Secondary Education, and Statistics. The dedicated faculty are committed to both excellence in teaching and student success. The concentration choice does not limit career opportunities, as the BS degree is a mathematics degree.

Why Choose Mathematics: Mathematical Sciences?

Mathematics is more than calculations and working with numbers. In addition to relevant mathematical and statistical skills and knowledge, a mathematics degree confirms the ability to solve complex problems with critical thinking, perseverance, and logical reasoning. Employers recognize and value these characteristics, and salaries typically reflect this acknowledgement. If you are undecided or considering graduate school, the Mathematical Sciences concentration will provide a broad overview of mathematics and provide a rigorous preparation for graduate school in mathematics or related fields such as engineering, finance, economics, and data science. This concentration allows the degree program to be tailored to career goals, and it is also a good second major for students in related STEM fields who want to become more competitive in their field.

What Will You Learn?

All SRU mathematics concentrations have the same core coursework, which includes calculus, discrete math, mathematical proofs, linear algebra, and statistics. The Mathematical Sciences concentration includes additional courses of differential equations, real analysis, and abstract algebra.

A mathematics degree strengthens critical thinking, and students graduating with a degree in Mathematics will:

  • Use mathematical knowledge to solve theoretical and applied problems.
  • Apply rigorous deductive logical reasoning to prove mathematical results.
  • Use appropriate technology to perform and interpret mathematical analyses.
  • Communicate mathematical results clearly and precisely to both expert and non-technical audiences.
  • Demonstrate professional integrity and accountability in the use and communication of mathematics.

Careers In Mathematics: Mathematical Sciences

The sciences fundamentally depend on mathematics, and mathematical applications extend to many diverse fields, including engineering, finance, economics, supply chain management, sports analytics, statistics, and data science. Mathematics degree graduates with a Mathematical Sciences concentration have many career possibilities. Graduates may attend graduate school in mathematics or another related field, or they may become teachers, data analysts in any field, or work in almost any branch of government, to name only a few of the many diverse possibilities. SRU Mathematics & Statistics students may declare a minor to further advance or diversify specialized skills.

Students in the SRU Mathematics program with a Mathematical Sciences concentration have many opportunities. Past student internships have included Johns Hopkins, AETNA, Erie Insurance, and Progressive. Others have earned graduate level degrees in Mathematics, Statistics, Data Analysis, Engineering, and more!
