Biology Honorary
Beta Beta Beta
Beta Beta Beta(or Tri-Beta) is the National Biological Honor Society for undergraduate students. The major objectives of Beta Beta Beta are to stimulate scholarship in the biological sciences, promote the dissemination of biological knowledge, and to encourage biological research. The honorary is also a service and social organization for biology majors and any students interested in the biological sciences. Slippery Rock's chapter of "Tri-Beta" (as we are commonly known) is the Lambda Lambda chapter. Dr. Miranda Falso and Dr. Paul Falso serve as the chapter's co-advisors.
The Lambda Lambda Chapter at Slippery Rock University provides programming for undergraduate biology through social, service and research opportunities. Each fall the honorary sponsors a tutoring program for freshman biology and chemistry courses. We typically have a fundraiser each semester, raising money in the past for scholarships and various charities like Relay for Life (we are always among the top SRU fundraising organizations.) Fundraisers have included raffles, sales, canning at WalMart or Giant Eagle, and Kennywood’s Fright Night. We also participate in several other service activities, including the PA Adopt-a-Highway program (2-4 highway cleanups each year) and Project Christmas Elf (we have adopted four children each year).
Outstanding service is provided by 30-45 students every year in assisting at the regional meeting of the PJAS (Pennsylvania Junior Academy of Science). Not only have members served as judges, but have acted as audiovisual coordinators for the various campus buildings where the meeting is held. The chapter typically takes biologically-related field trips each year, and the past few years we have visited the Baltimore Aquarium, Field Museum in Chicago, both the Pittsburgh and Cleveland Zoos, and the Carnegie Museum of Natural History. Some years we invite a former member back for an alumni lecture. Tri-Beta also co-hosts the Annual Fall Picnic for incoming freshmen, upperclassmen, and faculty.
