Biology: Conservation Biology
Offered by: BiologyA unique cross-curricular biology degree that combines coursework in the Biology Program with coursework from the Parks and Conservation Program. Students gain broad biological training with a deeper understanding of ecology, wildlife management and communicating about conservation and environmental topics with a variety of audiences.
Why Choose Conservation Biology?
The Conservation Biology program path will appeal to students that will become tomorrow’s conservation scientists, advocates, educators, technicians, and legal defenders on ecological issues. Slippery Rock University is an ideal location for training in Conservation Biology. SRU has an expansive, verdant campus, much of which is an Audubon Sanctuary. The Macoskey Center showcases the intersections and intertwined nature of humanity and the broader environment. Additionally, we have tens of thousands of acres of public wildlands and waterways in our immediate vicinity, from game lands to state parks to national forests and urban centers that allow our students access to hands on training in the field.
What Will You Learn?
Conservation science is a highly interdisciplinary area of study that requires balancing the needs of people with the need to protect, conserve, and understand the natural world. Students in this program will gain an understanding of the linkages of life from the individual organism to global ecosystems while also acknowledging the human dimensions, or social aspects, in these systems.
Careers In Conservation
Students in this concentration pursue careers as ecologists, conservation biologists, foresters, park rangers, game wardens, and many careers with private industry, government, or non-profit agencies focused on the environment, land management, forestry, wildlife and conservation efforts.
