Physics at SRU is complete with state-of-the-art undergraduate laboratories and facilities.

Active Learning Classroom

SRU's Physics department offers a course that is activity-based and discussion-oriented. The course has minimal formal lecturing and all class sessions will take place in the lab. Students will be primarily responsible for their own learning. For this type of learning environment, students become aware of how their own initial ideas are challenged and (perhaps) changed and how they came to understand and believe certain alternative ideas.

This class will help you develop a deep understanding of physics ideas that can be used to explain interesting phenomena, and are included in the elementary school science curriculum. It will also help you practice and develop an understanding of how knowledge is developed within a scientific community and help you become more aware of how your own physics ideas change and develop over time, as well as how the structure of the learning environment and curriculum facilitate these changes.

Computational Physics Lab

In our Computational Physics Lab, you will learn how to develop problem-solving, computing, collaborative, and laboratory skills.

Planetarium

SRU's planetarium is unique, because it is run entirely by students. There has been a slow migration from the old Spitz star projector to a digital projector. The capacity for seating is 50. Students organize the material and music for the shows, which includes full dome movies. Planetarium shows during the semester are on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 7:30-8:30PM, and it is free to the public.

Students who take Dr. Mukherjee's Astronomy and Space Science classes also use the planetarium. It serves as a venue for their service learning projects. Students design and choreograph shows for school children of all age group as well as for Boys Scouts and Girl Scouts.

SCALE-UP Classroom

The Physics department also subscribes to the SCALE-UP pedagogy with many opportunities for active engagement in the classroom. This style of teaching is student centered where the students are expected to be intellectually active during class sessions.
