Biology
The Department of Biology in the College of Engineering and Science offers students the opportunity to explore the diverse field of modern biological sciences and parks and conservation. The department offers traditional undergraduate degrees in biology, as well as, a number of accelerated degree options through affiliations with graduate and professional schools like the Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine, Slippery Rock University, Logan University, Palmer Chiropractic, and American University of Antigua.
The department is committed to providing students a comprehensive and contemporary education. Students are challenged academically through a combination of lectures and hands-on laboratory experiences. All but one course in the curriculum has a corresponding lab. Laboratory experiences provide students the opportunity to apply the knowledge they learn in the classroom and prepares them for research opportunities and advanced study. In addition to University and College level scholarships, students are able to apply for several different scholarships that are administered by the Scholarship Committee in the department. Some of these scholarships provide support to incoming freshmen majors and other scholarships are directed at upper class biology majors. Please go to the link for Undergraduate Scholarships to learn more about these awards.
Through the biology curriculum, students will be exposed to basic and advanced principles of molecular, cellular, organismal, and population biology. Students with a specific interest in the biological sciences can choose to concentrate their studies in a variety of fields, including, but not restricted to, anatomy, botany, cellular biology, ecology, microbiology, molecular biology, physiology, and zoology.
Biology majors have numerous opportunities to collaborate with faculty in undergraduate research. This collaborative research opportunity is a long-standing tradition in the Department and all undergraduates should seriously consider experiencing this high impact practice.
The degree programs offered by the Department of Biology prepare students for successful careers after Slippery Rock University. Our alumni commonly transition into careers in health, education, or industry.
